CodeRed information

Press Release

Pocahontas County and the town of Marlinton have contracted with Emergency Communications Network to license its CodeRED high-speed notification solution. The CodeRED system provides town and county officials the ability to quickly deliver messages to targeted areas or the entire county.
One of the reasons the CodeRED system was selected is it allows individuals and businesses to add their own phone numbers directly into the system’s database, this is an extremely important feature.

No one should assume his or her phone number is included. Please verify your information by following the “CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment” link on the Pocahontas County Commission, Pocahontas Times, WVMR or Town of Marlinton websites. Required information includes first and last name, physical address, city, state, zip code, and primary phone number, additional phone numbers can be entered as well as special needs information.

All businesses and camps should register, as well as all individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the past year, and those who use a cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number.

CodeRED allows geographically based call delivery, which means physical locations are required to ensure emergency notification calls are received by the proper individuals in a given situation. On the “CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment” page you will see a map with an icon indicating your address. In some cases this location will not be accurate, especially if your physical address includes a box number. In this case, move the icon to the correct position and it will be saved to the CodeRed database when you click “submit”. Clicking “submit” will only update the CodeRed database, not the Google map seen on the “Community Notification Enrollment” page. Therefore, when you access this page at a future date to edit your information, you will need to correct the map before submitting the changes. The data collected will only be used for emergency notification purposes.

Questions should be directed to Melvin Martin, Pocahontas County Office of Emergency Management, 799-3985. Those without internet access may also contact this number for verification that your number is in the system. This office cannot, however, verify your location. So, if at all possible, have someone familiar with your location input your information for you.

A test call will be initiated sometime in the next several weeks to all numbers in the database. An announcement will be run in the Pocahontas Times and broadcast on WVMR radio with the date and time prior to the call. If you do not receive the call, please re-verify your information.
