Smoke testing of sewers
PUBLIC NOTICE FOR ALL TOWN RESIDENTS
MARLINTON TO SMOKE TEST SEWERS
Smoke testing of Marlinton sanitary and storm sewer system will be conducted during the last week of October and First three weeks of November, weather permitting.
Smoke testing is a method of locating leaky sewers, lost manholes and faulty sewer connections. Testing will be done from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents can expect to see some smoke coming out of their sewer roof vents during the tests. If a residence has a faulty sewer connection, smoke might enter the house.
Officials urge customers not to be alarmed if that happens. The smoke is non-toxic and non-staining and creates no fire hazard. Opening windows and doors will cause the smoke to dissipate.
Anyone who has direct contact with the smoke might experience minor irritation of the respiratory passages.
If traces of smoke or odor enter your building, it should immediately be reported to the city at 304-799-4315 and to the plumber of your choice. Correction of defects in the pipes and sewer on private property is the responsibility of the homeowner.
Officials will post fliers to notify residents of the testing 24 hours before it begins in their area.
On the day residents get the fliers, they are advised to pour water down every drain in the home to make sure the U-bend sewer traps are full.
